Cultural Learning Alliance

In my opinion culture should be at the heart of the school curriculum so that every child can have the kind of cultural opportunities I was offered early in my education

Launch of the Henley Music Education Review – have your say!

Published 13 October 2010

The Henley Music Education Review is gaining momentum this week as a range of individuals and organisations submit their thinking on how children and young people should access music education.

The review is a joint initiative between the DCMS and DfE. In his letter announcing the review Michael Gove stated that ‘all young people should have the chance to learn an instrument, read music and receive top quality music education’.

Reading through the documentation it is clear that both departments are looking for ideas on how to innovate around delivery and are asking for detailed submissions from partners to contribute to their thinking. It is asked that partners include clear evidence of the impact of music education on children and young people, with an emphasis on attainment and standards.

It is critical that the cultural sector as a whole responds to this review as the documentation states that:

‘This review should focus initially on securing the best music education for all children and young people (aged 5 – 19) but should also take account of and make recommendations as to how cultural education could be delivered, based on the proposed models for music.’

The CLA will be compiling a response by Monday 25th October so please do send us your thoughts and ideas. The response form and details of the review can be found at: http://bit.ly/cXHN3B. Our submission will include:
Evidence of the value of culture to the lives of children young people and families, with a call for an emphasis on enjoyment and well-being alongside attainment and standards.A call for the full diversity of the music and cultural sector to be included within the reviewA call for the excellent existing cultural learning organisations and music and arts services to work with schools, young people and learning professionals at a local levelA call for clear brokerage systems, progression and a joined-up offer for every child
